It’s all about the music!

My love of Japanese music was sparked over 20 years ago. Growing up in a rural part of California’s desert, I craved anything that was different… which of course, was a lot. Luckily, we had satellite television and a connection to dial up internet. One afternoon while on summer vacation, I saw an interview of a Japanese band whom I would later find out to be Puffy AmiYumi. They showed clips of their “Run! Puffy! Run” tour that had recently wrapped in Japan, and now they were touring the US. Instantly hooked on songs like “kore ga watashi no ikiru michi” and “asia no junshin”, I knew immediately that I had to do something to hear more. So, I ran to the computer, and put a bid on ebay to get two cds shipped over from Japan.

A little later, I relocated to Anaheim and met a friend from Japan that was attending university. In almost no time, we started our band, Ichiban, a indie rock band four piece where the vocals were sung in Japanese—again something truly different for California!

My love of all-things-Japan only continued to grow as I grew my Sanrio, video game, and Japanese music collections. Landing in San Francisco, Ghibli movies became mandatory, trips to Tokyo came and went as frequently as they could, all the while I started recognizing my passion of connecting with things from the past: music, experiences, and the nostalgia felt with certain items. There was something so special to me about rediscovering gems from long ago and connecting them to the present. Tokyo Beatniks was created as an expression and embodiment of this notion!

Over the years, my passion for collecting has also brought very fulfilling experiences. Furthermore, these days—because of the collaboration with OK Marketplace—I am thrilled to now be in the position to extend my love of collecting to others. At the pop up, I sell items that I’ve personally sourced from Japan, and I’m excited to be the one that introduces and reconnects people with items they’ll continue to love. Also, with Tokyo Beatniks Record Label and deejaying Japanese vinyl, I am extended a platform I take proudly. It is very meaningful to me to be a conduit of Japanese music that sparks joy within a new generation!

日本の音楽への私の愛は20年以上前に始まりました。カリフォルニアの砂漠地帯の田舎で育った私は、何か違うものを求めていました…もちろん、それはたくさんありました。幸運にも、衛星テレビとダイヤルアップインターネット接続がありました。夏休みのある日の午後、私は日本のバンドのインタビューを見ました。後にそれがパフィーアミユミだと分かりました。彼らは日本で最近終了した「Run! Puffy! Run」ツアーの映像を見せてくれました。彼らは現在アメリカをツアー中です。「これが私の生きる道」や「アジアの純真」などの曲にすぐに夢中になり、もっと聞くために何かしなくてはならないとすぐに思いました。そこで、私はコンピューターに駆け寄り、日本からCD2枚を送ってもらおうとeBayで入札しました。

少し後、私はアナハイムに移り住み、大学に通っている日本の友人に会いました。あっという間に、私たちはバンド「Ichiban」を結成しました。これは、ボーカルが日本語の4人組のインディーロックバンドで、これもカリフォルニアではまったく異例のことです。

サンリオ、ビデオゲーム、日本の音楽コレクションが増えるにつれ、日本に関するあらゆるものへの愛はますます深まりました。サンフランシスコに上陸して、ジブリ映画は必須となり、東京への旅行はできるだけ頻繁に行き来するようになりました。その間、私は過去のものとのつながり、つまり音楽、経験、特定のアイテムから感じる懐かしさに情熱を傾けるようになりました。昔の宝石を再発見し、それを現在と結びつけることは、私にとってとても特別なことでした。Tokyo Beatniksは、この概念を表現し具体化するために作られました。

長年にわたり、収集への情熱は非常に充実した経験をもたらしました。さらに、最近では、OK Marketplaceとのコラボレーションにより、収集への愛を他の人に広めることができる立場にいることにも興奮しています。ポップアップでは、私が個人的に日本から調達した商品を販売しています。人々に愛され続ける商品を紹介し、再会させる存在になれることを嬉しく思います。また、東京ビートニクスレコードレーベルと日本のレコードのDJ活動により、私は誇りを持って活動の場を広げています。新しい世代に喜びをもたらす日本の音楽を伝えることは、私にとってとても意義深いことです。
